“Oh God, Cole, I’m not going to be able to sit down tomorrow.”

Cole smiled and then he kissed Cheyenne. “You liked it though, didn’t you? Admit it.”

  “I did. I never thought I’d like…”

  “Cheyenne, are you upstairs?”

Cheyenne grabbed her clothes and started pulling them on. “Quick, get dressed!”

“Babe, we’ve been dating for four years now, don’t you think your father knows I’m screwing you?”

“No, or you’d be a dead man. Now get dressed!”

Cole shook his head. He didn’t like to take orders, but he also didn’t like to see Cheyenne upset. Cheyenne was the one person he loved almost as much as he loved himself.

Jonny shoved his books into his backpack, pushed in his chair and then waved to the woman at the library counter as he passed her by. “Have a good night, Mrs. Davies.”

“You too, Jonny, and thank you again for helping me carry those boxes up from the basement.”

  Jonny smiled. “Any time.”

Mrs. Davies waved. He hadn’t left for college yet, but she already missed him.

Jonny barely had one foot out the door when he heard his name. “Jonny!”

  “Hey, Cindy.”

Cindy ran toward Jonny. “I’ve been calling you.”

“I silenced the phone when I got to the library. What’s up?”

  “We need to talk.”

Jonny’s stomach knotted when Cindy looked away and then down at the ground. “Talk? What’s going on, Cin?”

“Why don’t we go to the car.” Cindy started down the stairs.

Jonny followed. As they approached the car Jonny reached out his hand and placed it onto Cindy’s shoulder. “Cin, just tell me.”

Cindy turned and reached out her hand. “I was accepted at UCLA.”

“In California…I mean…I know where it is.” Jonny shoved his hands into his pockets.

  “I’ve decided to go.”

  “Just like that?”

  “Jon…”

“Cindy, we discussed this. I applied to the schools that you wanted to go to so that we could be together and now you’re telling me that unbeknownst to me, you applied to UCLA?”

  “It was a last-minute decision.”

“What prompted your decision, or should I say who?”

Cindy attempted to pull Jonny’s hand from his pocket, but Jonny shrugged her off. “Jonny, I care about you, I do…but…” Cindy started to cry. “I met someone else and…”

Jonny ran his hands through his hair. “Stop! Just stop! I don’t need details.” Jonny opened the car door.

“Jonny, wait, please let me explain.”

Jonny looked over his shoulder at Cindy. “There is nothing left to explain. You met someone else and we’re over.” Jonny climbed into his car, slammed the door, and tore out of the parking lot.

  “Bro, what’s up?”

  “Cindy dumped me.”

  “For real?”

“Yes, for real. You know I don’t even know why I bothered to call you.” Jonny hung up.

Cole looked down at his phone and hit redial.

“Did you call to curse me out for hanging up on you?”

“No, J, I’m sorry. Where are you?

  “I’m walking into Barley’s.”

  “I’ll be right there.”

“Chey, Baby, I have to go.” Cole gave Cheyenne a quick kiss.

  “Is Jonny ok?”

  “Cindy broke up with him.”

  “Oh no! Poor Jonny.”

  “Yeah, he sounded awful.”

Cheyenne gave Cole another kiss. “Call me later and let me know how he’s doing.”

  “I will.”

Jonny sat at the bar drinking his beer. He felt as if his world had crumbled in a matter of five minutes.

“I got here as fast as I could.”

Jonny didn’t even look up at his brother. He continued to sip his beer. “She met someone else.”

  “Shit, I’m sorry.”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

  “Do, as in?”

“I pretty much planned my future around Cindy and now I feel so lost and alone.”

Cole placed his hand on his brother’s back. “You’ll never be alone, J, I’m here for you.”

Jonny turned toward Cole. “Thanks, C.”

“In fact, why don’t you apply and come to Duke with me?”

  “Really?”

“Yeah, shit, we could get an apartment together and party without mom and dad breathing down our necks.”

“J, I’m not going off to college so that I can party.”

“Neither am I…for the most part.”

“I’d hope not, or you’ll lose your scholarship.”

“You know how much football means to me. I’m not about to screw that up.”

“Then maybe you should cut down on your beer consumption.”

Cole looked down at his beer and then chugged what was left in his mug. “What? I only had two.”

“Three but who’s counting.” Jonny shook his head as he took another sip of his beer which was getting warm, he’d been nursing it for so long.

  “It’s Friday night.”

“So, because it’s Friday you have to drink yourself into Saturday?”

Cole looked up just as Cindy walked in. “Shit!”

Jonny looked at Cole and then in the direction his brother was looking. “Don’t look at her. The last thing I want is for her to come over here.”

“It’s too late. She’s headed this way.”

Jonny stood up. “I need some air.”

Cole chugged a few more beers while he listened to Cindy cry because Jonny wouldn’t speak
to her. Finally, he couldn’t take it anymore. “Look, Cindy, after what you did to my brother, I don’t blame him for not wanting to talk to you. So why don’t you go cry on your new boyfriend’s shoulder.” Cole stood, tossed down some cash and left.

Once he was outside, he looked around for Jonny. “J!”

Jonny came walking around the side of the bar to the front where Cole was. “I couldn’t handle seeing her.”

“I tried to get out here sooner, but she burst into tears.”

“Yeah, well that is on her.”

“I finally exploded and told her I didn’t blame you for not wanting to talk to her and that’s when I left.”

  “I need to get home.”

  “Where’s your car?”

“I walked. I had hoped to drink myself into oblivion.”

“Come on, I’ll give you a ride.” Cole walked over to his car and climbed in.

Jonny got in, buckled up and turned toward Cole. “You sure that you’re ok to drive?”

“I’m fine. I’ve driven after a few six packs without a problem.” Cole started up the car and drove off.

Jonny finally looked down at his phone which had been vibrating for the last ten minutes. All the messages were from Cindy. He was in the middle of reading a message when he saw a bright light. He looked up but before he could fathom what was happening the car hit a tree and everything went black.

Jonny wasn’t sure how much time had passed when he opened his eyes. He could hear sirens in the distance. “Cole!” Cole was unconscious. Jonny knew that even if the crash wasn’t a result of Cole being drunk, that legally he more than likely was. He unbuckled his seat belt and then Cole’s. He opened the car door and climbed out. Then he dragged Cole into the passenger seat. “Cole, can you hear me? Cole, it’s Jonny.”

The police pulled up and the officer ran over to the car. “Are you alright?”

“You have to help my brother.” Jonny stepped to the side.

It was then that the police officer saw Cole. He checked for a pulse. “The ambulance is on its way. I don’t want to move him.” The officer turned and looked at Jonny. “You don’t look so good either.”

“I’m ok, just worried about my brother.” Jonny leaned down next to Cole. “Cole, open your eyes. Cole…” Jonny passed out.

  Two days later…

  “Ready to go home?”

  “More than ready.”

  “Dad’s outside.”

“J, before we go…I want to thank you for what you did for me.”

“You’d have done the same for me.”

Cole reached up his hand and patted Jonny on the back. “I’d never have to because you’d never drink and drive. What I did was stupid. I could have killed us both.”

  “Yeah, you could have.”

“I promise, I won’t ever drink and drive again.”

“Good, because next time you might not be so lucky as to only have a concussion and some broken ribs.”

Cole grabbed a hold of Jonny’s wrist. “I never could have lived with myself if…”

“I’m fine. The doctor said so.”

“Well, I can still see your black eyes and I’ll never forget how I felt when I woke up and they told me that we were in an accident.”

“Speaking of the accident…we are going to have to share my truck until you get a replacement vehicle.”

Cole gave his brother a sly grin. “Your truck is more sex friendly than my car.”

Jonny shot his brother a dirty look. “Oh no, you are not going to nail Cheyenne in my truck!”

  “We’ll see.”

  “No, we won’t see.”

Cole opened his mouth to speak and the orderly came in. “Ready to go home?”

Cheyenne sat on the front steps of Cole’s house waiting for him to arrive. She wanted to visit him in the hospital, but her father didn’t approve. He said that hospitals were full of germs and he didn’t want her to be exposed. Cheyenne missed Cole but her daddy was always right, so she waited until Cole came home to see him.

“Cheyenne, you’re more than welcome to wait inside.”

“Oh, thank you, Mrs. Black, but I promised Cole that I would be the first thing he’d see when he got home.”

Cole’s mother looked down at Cheyenne and smiled. “Ok, Dear. I will be inside if you change your mind.”

  “I won’t but thank you.”

Cole sat in the back seat of the car counting the minutes until he saw Cheyenne. She was all he thought about once he knew that Jonny was ok.

His dad pulled into the driveway and Cheyenne bolted toward the car. She pulled the door open and grabbed Cole. “Ahhhh!”

Cheyenne stepped back. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Did I hurt you?”

Cole slowly exhaled. “No hugs for a bit.”

Jonny got out of the car. “Hey, Cheyenne.”

Cheyenne looked up at Jonny. “Oh, Jon, you look awful. You poor thing.”

“Thanks, Cheyenne.” Jonny walked toward the house.

“Hey, Jonny’s had a rough week. Don’t remind him of how bad he looks.”

  “It slipped out.”

  “Hello, Cheyenne.”

  “Hello, Mr. Black.”

“Cole, give me your hands so that I can help you out of this car.”

Cole extended his hands. His father gently lifted him from the car. “Well now that you’re upright, I’ll leave you two alone.”

  “Thanks, Dad.”

Jonny was sitting on his bed deleting pictures of Cindy when Cheyenne knocked. Jonny looked up and saw her standing there smiling at him. Her smile was like a ray of sunshine. “Hey!”

  “Can I come in?”

“Sure, but shouldn’t you be doting over Cole?”

Cheyenne sat down next to Jonny on the bed. “Maybe but I wanted to check in on you.”

  “I’m ok.”

Cheyenne looked between Jonny and his phone. “Cindy wasn’t the right girl for you. You deserve much better.”

Jonny looked at his phone and then placed it face down onto his bed. “We had our lives all planned out and then out of nowhere she…”

Cheyenne reached her hand up and placed it onto Jonny’s cheek. “She’s a fool.”

“I’m the fool. I don’t think she ever really loved me.”

“What’s not to love?” Cheyenne smiled.

Jonny gave her a smirk. “I don’t know, you tell me?”

Cheyenne stared at Jonny for a second. “I’m not sure what you want me to say?”

  “Forget it.”

Cheyenne felt uncomfortable. She stood. “Fine. It’s forgotten.”

Cole’s mother practically tucked him into his bed. Once she left, he managed to sit himself up. “Now that my mom’s gone why don’t you climb into the bed with me?”

“Because one thing will lead to another and you, my dear, are not allowed to have sex.”

“Chey, I just want to be near you.”

Cheyenne placed her hand onto Cole’s forehead. “Hmm, no fever.”

  “What?”

“You never want to be near me unless you’re inside me.”

Cole grabbed Cheyenne’s hand. “I just want to be close to you.”

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Ok, then sit next to me and hold my hand.”

“How are you feeling, Bro, need anything?”

Cole looked down at Cheyenne who was leaning her head against his shoulder. “I have everything I need right here.”

  “Ok.” Jonny turned to leave.

  “J, you alright?”

  Jonny shrugged his shoulders. “No.”

“Come sit with us, Jon.” Cheyenne patted the spot next to her on the bed.

“Nah, I think I’m going to take a walk.”

  “Walk?”

“Jon, are you afraid to drive now because of the accident?”

  “No, why would…”

“Chey, I have to tell you something.”

  Cheyenne pulled back and lo
oked at Cole and then over at Jonny. “What is it?”

  “Cole, don’t!”

“It’s ok. She’s not going to tell anyone.”

Jonny threw his hands in the air and walked out.

  “Cole, what’s going on?”

  “Jonny wasn’t driving…I was.”

Cheyenne got up from the bed. “You were drinking, weren’t you?”

  Cole nodded. “Yes, and…”

“Seriously! You both could have been killed!”

“I know. All I could think about when I regained consciousness was J.”

“Your brother isn’t always going to be there to save you.”

  “I didn’t ask him to.”

“You never do, he just jumps in and saves your sorry ass!” Cheyenne shook her head. “I need to leave before I say something, I can’t take back.”

  “Chey!”

Jonny made it as far as his front steps and then sat down. He felt weak and queasy. A minute later Cheyenne walked out onto the porch. “I thought that you were going for a walk?”

“I guess I’m not feeling so well after all.”

Cheyenne sat down next to Jonny. “Can I help you inside?”

“I’ll be ok. I just needed to rest a minute.”

“Jon, I know this week has sucked for you but…”

“Save it, Chey.” Jonny got up and went inside.

Cheyenne stepped inside her front door and was greeted by her father. “Where were you?”

“I told you that I was going to visit Cole.”

  “You missed dinner.”

  “I’m sorry, Father.”

“I can’t wait for you to go off to college and leave that boy.”

“Why do you hate him so much?”

“He isn’t good enough for you.”

“Why not? He comes from a good family; he’s the star of the football and wrestling teams and he loves me.”

“He is a spoiled deserving jock and he doesn’t deserve you.”

“I don’t deserve him. Do you know how many girls envy me because they want him, and he chose ME!”
